Wylie senior, Bekah Mansur, recently got her pilot’s license at the age of 17. I interviewed her to learn about how she became interested in becoming a pilot and how she went about getting her license.
When did you decide you wanted to be a pilot? “A couple of years ago because my dad got his pilot’s license, and I love traveling.”
What training was involved to get your license? “I took a 3 week long summer camp with no flight experience. My flight instructor was Alex Nichols. Afterwards, I rented a plane and would practice flying in it for a couple of months until I got my pilot’s license on January 20.”
What are your plans after high school? “I want to go to Texas A&M or BYU to get my business degree. I want to become a flight instructor and maybe be in the National Guard. I also plan on piloting as a career someday.”
What is the most exciting or fun part about flying? “Probably the feeling of a really good landing or smooth landing and looking down and seeing everything below.”
While most teenagers want getting their driver’s license to be their top priority, it is really cool that we have a pilot in our high school.
