For the second year in a row, Hope Willis won the state 5A title in tennis. She came into the tournament with a bye first round because she won the regional tournament. In her quarterfinal match, she defeated Allison Crane from Alamo Heights 6-2, 6-2. The semifinals was a highly anticipated matchup against College Station’s Maya Diyasheva who Willis beat 6-3, 6-4. Diyasheva won state in mixed doubles as a freshman and is going to play tennis at Carnegie Mellon University in the fall. The finals was against Corpus Christi Flour Bluff’s Victoria Torres. While Torres was an impressive freshman opponent, Willis came through with her experience with a 6-1, 6-2 win which solidified her second state title.
Girls’ doubles team Arabella Dlugiewicz and Mia Martinez and boys’ doubles team Witten Sides and James McCall also competed. While neither team advanced past the quarterfinal, they all represented Wylie well. Wylie tennis’ next big adventure to look forward to is team tennis in the fall where they plan to compete for a state team title.
