On February 22 of 2026, our USA Hockey team just made history.
After almost 40 years, the men’s hockey team brought home gold against Canada.

The last time USA won gold for hockey was February 24, 1980 during the Winter Olympics held in New York and was called “Miracle on Ice” with Mike Eruzione scoring the winning goal against the Soviet Union winning 4-3 with ten minutes left in the third period.
In a statement made by the 1980 hockey hero Mike Eruzione himself he states, “This isn’t a miracle. I’ve been saying it for a long time, it’s time. This is the best hockey team we’ve ever put on the ice. The best men’s team that’s every played. They’re talented, they’re gifted, they’re skilled, they’re young which is good, and you know my teammates and I want this moment, we want these guys to achieve something- it’s time. What we did is done what we did is over, it’s ended, it was 40 something years ago. My grandkids need their hockey heroes and it’s gonna be this team, I believe it I firmly believe this is the best team in the tournament. It’s hard to win, but this is their time, this is an opportunity for them to realize their dream, and I heard of many of these players and I know most of them how they talk about when they were kids, they watched the miracle. This isn’t a miracle, this is a team that deserves to be in the championship game, in the gold medal game, and a team that can win it.”
It was a tough game having lost 3-2 last time we played Canada, and was dangerously close to losing this time too. In the first period USA scored six minutes into the game with the shot being made by Number 12 Matt Boldy. During the second period Canada began regaining footing and holding their ground, with 38 minutes into the game they scored on USA by Number 8 Cale Makar. Third period was when the heat really began to catch on, with neither having scored and doing their absolute best to keep each other away from their goals. Midway through the third period Canada almost got the jump on USA before Connor Hellebuyck the goaltender made his signature “save of the tournament” move by using his stick to make a diving, goal-saving stop on Devon Toews shot, keeping the game tied 1-1. With the game being tied at the very end they went into Over Time, where they played three on three. This was by far the most tense part of the game but by minute 61, Quinn Hughes was pulled out and was replaced by his twin brother Jack Hughes who scored the golden goal of the game, and became the hero of the night for the USA.

Jack and the rest of the team flanked each other as they celebrated this long, overdue victory. During the celebration two teammates even brought out the sweater of the late Johnny Gaudreau, who alongside his brother passed away in 2024 while attending their sister’s wedding and getting hit by a drunk driver during a late night bike ride. They skated around the rink holding up the Number 13 sweater showing how this was as much his victory as theirs and representing the American sportsmanship that the brotherhood of hockey hold for each other. What makes this victory even more heartfelt too is knowing that February 22 is the birthday of Johnny Jr. the son of Johnny Gaudreau, making this win even more important to both the team and the Gaudreau family.

After receiving the gold Olympic medals and singing the American National Anthem, the team came together for their victory photos and brought back as well Johnny’s sweater and even bringing his children out onto the ice to hold up his sweater, showing how even if he’s gone he still stays as the heart of the team.

USA and Canada will be flying the night of the 22nd, into Miami where USA can go home as heroes of the night and take pride in knowing they did this victory for America and for each other.
