In 1958, Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson fall in love during a summer romance at the beach, but after Sandy returns to Australia, she unexpectedly enrolls at Rydell High, where she reunites with Danny. At school, Danny struggles to maintain his tough-guy image in front of his friends, causing tension with Sandy. As the year progresses, Danny tries to win her back, and Sandy undergoes a transformation to impress him. Meanwhile, their friends deal with romantic ups and downs.
The school dance and a race between Danny and rival Leo lead to a series of misunderstandings and reconciliations. Ultimately, Sandy decides to embrace a new look to be with Danny. The film ends with the couple reunited, leaving Rydell High in the Greased Lightning car, which flies off into the sky, symbolizing their love and transformation.
Grease was released in the United States on June 16, 1978, by Paramount Pictures. The film was successful both critically and commercially, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1978 and the highest-grossing musical film at the time. Its soundtrack album ended 1978 as the second-best-selling album of the year in the United States and the song “Hopelessly Devoted to You” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 51st Academy Awards.
