Suzanne Collins has the unique ability to captivate her readers and transform words on a page into a memorable experience for anyone who reads her books. She has been extremely successful with her Hunger Games Trilogy and its prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but she has recently released her newest book Sunrise on the Reaping.
This book is such a compelling read. It begins in District 12, where Haymitch Abernathy gets forced into the ritualistic Hunger Games. In the games, children from every district must fight to the death in order to remind the districts of the pain caused by the War. This book transports its readers to the dystopian society of Panem which is located in present day America. As Haymitch fights for his life, he faces so much hardship, but is ultimately crowned victor of the Hunger Games. As Haymitch is the victor, he is allowed to return home to district 12, But what he finds is that the games aren’t just confined to the arena.
It explains so much about Haymitch and his mannerisms along with providing a lot of detail on Katniss’ family tree. This book has so many connections to really tie both the original trilogy and the prequel together. Sunrise on the Reaping is unbelievably good. During this past summer, I broke my finger, and this book helped to stave off boredom when I couldn’t really do much else. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Hunger Games, Divergent, Twilight, Harry Potter, or even Percy Jackson books. However, even if you haven’t read any of these books, or even any books at all, the Hunger Games is a phenomenal series and Sunrise on the Reaping is a wonderful book.
