Many students use AI to correct or even write many of the papers that teachers give them. The school leaves it up to the individual teacher to decide whether or not students can use AI, rather than the school having a clear punishment for the use of AI. This can leave many students wondering where teachers’ opinions lie on whether they can use AI to help them. Many students use AI as a tool to help teach them or as a second pair of eyes to check their papers.
While different teachers have varying opinions on the use of AI, the most common opinion shared by a variety of teachers is that AI should be used as a tool to help students correct and improve their papers. On the other hand, there were very few teachers who said that AI should never be used. Mr. Crumbliss is quoted as saying, “AI is a useful tool, but I don’t use it for lesson plans because students deserve a real teacher.”
On the other hand, Mrs. Jansa said, “I use it in my education class to help generate lesson plans and then refine them, and students should be using AI to explain to them how to do it, not just doing the work for them.”
Mrs. Wisham said, “AI should not be used as a tool to cheat, but can be used as a tool to correct, guide, or learn.”
Coach Hayworth said, “I don’t think that AI should be used at all in school.”
Overall, it seems as if the majority of teachers know that AI is here to stay and can be used in a positive way as long as there is academic integrity. There are many pros and cons to using AI. One major pro that a lot of students currently take advantage of is that AI can help make study materials that students wouldn’t have found or wouldn’t have thought of, causing students to have better grades, while the number of students cheating off of each other has gone down. While yes, many of the students might use the con side of AI, where they just have AI write the paper or solve the answers for them, this is only a short-term gain because once they are put in a situation where AI is no longer available, it will quickly become apparent that the student had used AI.
