Varsity tennis has begun their 2017-2018 season by sweeping all of their district matches 19-0. This year’s team wishes to continue being a dominant force allowing them to capture another state title. We spoke to head tennis coach Brent Abilez to hear his view on this year’s team and their goals for the season.

“If you’re always ready-no matter the time or place-then you will be able to go out there and fight through every match,” said Abilez.

The team is striving for another state title to add to their previous 13. They have set the goals to work hard in order to get better each and every week and represent Wylie well. In order to achieve their goals for the season, Abilez explained that the team has focused on not only being physically strong, but mentally strong as well.

“When everybody comes out and works hard toward the same goal, we can get the job done,” Abilez said.

After losing the top 2 girls and boys from last year, the team has had to step up and compete to fill their absence. This year’s varsity team includes 6 seniors- 3 on both the boy and girl side of the lineup. The whole team is incredibly competitive, which pushes each player to put in extra practice to make themselves better.

“As soon as you step on the court ‘vamo’- lets go, take care of business, be in the zone, be focused, and don’t let your guard down,” said Abilez.

Overall, the team atmosphere is very competitive. The phrase ‘vamo’ is used regularly to increase the energy level and prepare the team to compete. The team has grown very close over the past several months of practicing and playing in tournaments. Even though there may be disagreements, at the end of the day, they have learned to put aside their differences and work together as a team.

“In order to succeed, you can’t ever let your guard down-even for a minute-if you want to be the best in this game,” said Abilez.

In the first round of the playoffs, the team beat Burkburnett 16-0. They play the next round against Alvarado in Brock on Thursday, October 18. The Regional tournament will be held on October 26 and 27 here in Abilene. The state tournament is November 1 and 2 in College Station.
