Wylie Track Season Underway

Kolby Corbett, staff writer

As spring has arrived, so have several fan-favorite sports. Chief among those has to be track and field. With fast paced sprints that go by in a blink to endurance runs that take just as much mental strength to run as physical, and from long jump to discus, there’s something to watch for everyone. Wylie has a rich history of competing in track, and those traditions of fierce competition are found this year as well. Led by coaches Elliot and Morales, students are taught how to apply strategies in their individual or team competition and excel.

Over the past few meets, students have been making their mark, with several events making the all-time leaderboards for Wylie track and field. These students have accomplished this feat:

800 meters: Payton Stone, 2:11

1600 meters: Colten Stevens, 4:46, Emerie Nicholson, 6:03

3200 meters: Colten Stevens, 10:21

4×100 relay: John-Henry Curington, Ethan Hoffman, Jaegan Smith, Larry Smith-Bell, 44.97; Jahniya George, Brin Heuerman, Kate Kelfstrom, M’lia Whitman, 50.2

Discus: Ryan Blake, 166’7”

Long Jump: M’lia Whitman

Triple jump: Andre Washington, 43’6”

High Jump: Jolea Ward, 4’10”

Pole Vault: Rachael Sorensen, 9’6”

Every week the Bulldogs will compete for gold at various invitationals and other meets. Later this month, the kids will go to district and represent our school. Feel free to show up and give our students a cheer!
