The Wylie boys’ soccer team is halfway through the season and have been playing amazing so far. The varsity squad is currently 6-6-1 on the season, which is the best our soccer program has done in recent years. Along with these games, they also played in two tournaments where Wylie placed top 3 among 40+ teams and top 10 in the second, smaller tournament. The primary reason for this thriving boys soccer team is their coach. Coach Oscar Villeda is in his first year as head coach of the soccer program and has led his athletes to not only become better soccer players but also to become better students in the classroom.

When asked about this season, soccer player Ethan Carnes said, “For the first time in 5A, our boys soccer team has had a winning record in both preseason and district. Our boys have fought game after game to try to make each other, our coaches, families, and our school proud and to me, I think we have done that. Starting off district losing to Abilene high 2-1 was definitely motivation to try to keep fighting, and we used that motivation to beat Cooper 4-1 the very next game. We currently have a win streak of two right now beating Lubbock high 3-1 and Lubbock Coronado 3-0 this past Tuesday. We hope to keep it going this Friday against a very strong reigning district champion, Lubbock Cooper, at home. With only 6 games left in the season, I couldn’t be more proud of the way the boys have played this year and of our amazing first year coach, Oscar Villeda.”

Along with Coach Villeda, Coach Wallace has been working with the JV players at becoming the next stars for the upcoming seasons.
