The Wylie Pure Gold Band started off their marching season strong with performances for friends family and football games. With the start of the new season the band was met with a new percussion director, Mr. Joshua Howeth. Mr. Howeth has been a welcome addition to the percussion section, and was interviewed by student Samuel Tawiah on how he viewed his experiences with the band.
S. Tawiah – Mr. Howeth, we know you previously taught at Wylie High School before leaving to teach at Jim Ned. In your own playing experiences and time spent teaching these bands, what has the band program provided you with?
J. Howeth – Band provided me with a lot of unique and fun filled experiences from playing instruments to travelling all over the world, from going to Florida to London, and even playing at Carnegie Hall in New York.
S. Tawiah – And in all of those travels, what has been the most rewarding thing you’ve earned?
J. Howeth – Getting to see all of my students to be a little better every day, from their playing to their interactions with one another. Seeing the hard work going into every performance pay off and being able to walk off feeling that you’ve left everything on the stage.
S. Tawiah – What advice would you like to give out regarding leadership?
J. Howeth – Have patience, good things come with time. In addition, leadership is a lot more than great speeches, modelling goes a long way. Some people will buy into the work immediately and those people help to set that example to those around them. Once those people see the difference that their ethic makes, it catches on and spreads.
Mr. Howeth and the percussion section hope to continue growing in every aspect throughout the season, setting a good precedent for years to come.
