The Election:
A pivotal time in America every 4 years. A chance to elect one person to change the course of history. Every president literally has an entire country riding on their back, and picking the right one to carry the weight is a momentous decision. This article will cover the issues in which each Candidate stands, their plans to fix certain issues, and their stances in the most recent polls.
Abortion:
The Candidates have very different views on the issue of pregnancy rights. Trump stands for states deciding on the issues within the states’ governments. However, in cases of rape and where the mother is at risk, Trump is for the option for the mother to abort the fetus. Harris, on the other hand, supports a mother’s pregnancy rights becoming constitutional law and giving the mother the right to abort, regardless of the fetal viability and the reason for which the mother would abort her child. In short, Harris is in support of the original stance of Roe vs. Wade, while President Trump stands with the overturn of Roe vs. Wade that happened in 2022.
Economy:
Trump plans to “make America affordable again” (Geogheagen, BBC News). He will accomplish this by implementing lower interest rates, by drilling for more oil. Former President Trump also claims that deporting illegal immigrants will ease pressure on housing costs. Trump is in support of raising tariffs on foreign goods to promote the manufacture of American made goods, while Kamala Harris stands to either leave the tariffs, if not lower them on foreign goods. Trump has specifically decided to raise imports from China to a 60% increase.
Harris’ economic plan generally supports the middle class while also expanding tax deductions for small businesses she plans on “restoring the earned income tax credit, promising to not raise taxes for those making less than $400k and implementing a $6,000 child tax credit” (Baio, The Independent). She will also be providing a momentous down payment assistance of $25,000 for new homeowners.
Right to bear Arms:
Harris supports reducing gun violence by denying the right to purchase guns to certain people and issuing red flags to those “unreliable” to wield a gun, such as those with mental illnesses. She also plans on banning assault weapons for selling purposes. President Trump plans to take away the “Zero Tolerance” policy implemented by President Biden, Trump also says he would reverse regulations placed on pistol braces and stabilization weapons.
Polls:
Throughout the race, the polls have been tight. As of November 4, though, Kamala Harris seems to be winning amongst the national consensus of voters. However, Donald Trump has reigned a majority among the battleground states including: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania with Vice President Harris, however, leading polls in both Wisconsin and Michigan. The race is so close though, with Kamala Harris ahead by only 1%. However, the polls may change.
