The varsity coed tennis team just finished their fall team tennis season as the state runner-up. Their final record was 23-6.
Team tennis starts in the fall and consists of seven girls and seven boys that play in the match. There are 12 single matches, 6 double matches and 1 mixed doubles match for a total of 19 matches. The first team to win 10 matches wins the overall competition. Individual tennis starts in the spring and players have to choose between singles, doubles or mixed. As the name says, every girl and boy plays for themselves.
Wylie’s first round of district (Bi-District) was played against Amarillo Tascosa, and they went 11-3. In Area, Wylie blew out El Paso Chapin with a score of 15-0. In Regionals, Wylie won every game and advanced to the State Semi-finals. Wylie’s first State opponent was Mission Sharyland, a school from Mission, Texas. They ended up with a score of 10-7 resulting in a win. October 23 was the day of the Finals, and they were played at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. They played against Frisco Centennial High School who is ranked first in Texas.
The varsity team has a total of 14 boys and girls with 3 freshman, 5 sophomores, 3 juniors, and 3 seniors. It is a very diverse team with lots of skill. There are also a lot of upcoming freshman with potential that will be beneficial to Wylie tennis.
Unfortunately, Wylie lost to Frisco Centennial with a final score of 2-10. We won our mixed doubles match and a boys double match, and lost every singles and every girls doubles match. The Frisco team was loaded with seniors while our team was heavy with underclassmen. Wylie is expected to have just as much talent next year and to return to playoffs for another shot.
