As many people know, most of the schools in our district have implemented new policies regarding cell phones and other cellular devices. A few rules in Wylie are that devices are to be kept in students’ bags from 7:50-3:40. Some students have mixed feelings about this and think the policies should be reverted to what was in place last year. But, there are also a number of students and teachers who have seen an increase in grades and less skipping class. So, should the rules be reverted back to last year, or should they stay implemented to help students advance their educations?
Teachers have enforced these rules along with a few others. An example of one of these rules was to have students place their belongings in a corner or against a wall in their classrooms. This rule was implemented to stop distractions and to stop students from being disruptive. Many students think that this policy is less effective than keeping their bags at their desks.
A student named Anthony Swingle stated, ”I get the phone policy, but having to move my bag to the other side of the classroom is just unnecessary. It just makes it a hassle to have to put it there and then have to go back and forth just to grab my supplies.”
Only a few students still have issues with the phone policy because many students have already adapted to it.
”While there are some pros to having phones in school- such as- it makes it more convenient to contact parents, study, and check grades, the cons of allowing phones in schools simply outweighs all these. Allowing phones to be used in schools gives students the opportunity to cyber bully, and use phones to send inappropriate images and things of that sort while in the school building. Therefore our education is better off phone-free,” declared a student named Taylor Davis.
The new phone policies will take some getting used to, but many of the students have already adapted to being without their phones for a few hours. Overall, grades have increased and less trouble has been made recently, so the school will most likely keep these policies in place in order to keep seeing these results. But phones are a tool that can be used to help advance people’s educations, or they can be abused by students who choose to commit to other, less rewarding actions. So in short, the school should keep these policies in place in order for grades to increase, and for there to be fewer distractions in the classroom.
