(VASE) The High School Visual Arts Scholastic Event has been a beacon for young artists, providing a platform where creativity knows no bounds. A competition that celebrates artistic talent and nurtures budding creativity, VASE has become an integral part of the high school experience for aspiring artists across Texas.
At its heart, VASE is a competition that invites high school students to showcase their artistic prowess through a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, and more. Each year, thousands of students participate in regional and state level VASE events, where their works are judged based on originality, technical skill, and artistic expression.
What sets VASE apart is its emphasis on individuality and personal expression. Unlike traditional art competitions that adhere to strict guidelines or themes, VASE encourages students to explore their unique artistic visions and push the boundaries of their creativity. Whether experimenting with new techniques or drawing inspiration from personal experiences, participants are encouraged to let their imagination run wild.
The competition has students submit artwork by a certain deadline. They then present their artwork to a judge who grades them from 1-4, 4 being the best. Students use this time being judged to tell all about their artwork, the techniques they used, and what inspired them. All submissions that are judged a 4 are then put in a room for a second round of judging. Judges choose what artwork will then go on to state.
Wylie students competed here in Abilene. Nine advanced and will be in San Marcus later this month to compete with the best high school artists in the state. This program couldn’t have been possible without our amazing art teachers Ms. Camp and Ms. Hughes. They have been integral to our school and art department for years, and their hard work is visible in our school’s talented young artists.
