National holidays are something people either observe or laugh about. Some of them
make sense while others are just plain bizarre. So, let’s look at the top ten weirdest national
holidays in America.
1. Fruit cake toss day- It is celebrated on the first Saturday of January. This holiday is when
people toss out their unwanted fruit cakes from Christmas.
2. Middle child day- This holiday is celebrated on August 12th. This day is to celebrate all of the
normally excluded middle children.
3. Talk like Shakespeare day- This day is celebrated on April 23rd. On this rather strange
holiday, Americans run around town reciting Shakespearean sonnets and lines from his plays, or
they go on social media and add “est” to everything. This particular date is also Shakespeare’s
birthday and date of death.
4. National Hairball awareness day- This day is celebrated on the last Friday in April. This
holiday is for people to implement preventative measures to help cats manage their hairballs.
5. Pie day- This day is celebrated on March 14th. This is because 3, 1, and 4 are the first digits of
the mathematical constant, pie. This day celebrates both the sweet treat, pie and the mathematical
constant. The most common way to celebrate this holiday is by eating— you guessed it— pie.
The first recorded celebration of pie day was in San Francisco in 1988 where people marched
around while eating fruit pies at the San Francisco Exploratorium.
6. No socks day- This day is celebrated on May 8th. This holiday is to celebrated to let your feet
breathe. No socks day was created by actor, Thomas Roy and his wife.
7. Lost sock memorial day. This day is celebrated on May 9th. This holiday is commemorate all
their lost socks.
8. National x spouse day- This day is celebrated on April 14th. This holiday is to celebrate one’s
former life partner.
9. Squirrel appreciation day- This day is celebrated on January 21st. This holiday is celebrated to
do just what the title suggested.
10. Barber shop quartet day- This day is celebrated on April 11th. It is celebrated to bring
people back to the 20th century where Barber shop quartets were very prevalent.
As you can see, America has some strange holidays.
