It’s Fall in the big country, and on Friday nights, the lights are shining brightly on the Bulldogs.
The football team has secured a playoff berth after a commanding 33-16 victory over the Palo Duro High Dons, improving their district record to 3-1. After their rocky 0-2 start, the Bulldogs have only lost one game since and won 6 of 7 in the following weeks. These teams aren’t pushovers, either. The Bulldogs got their first win in franchise history against a strong Lubbock Cooper team, as well as close-fought battles with Stephenville, Central, and Plainview. A 52-7 blowout against Lubbock High has also been a welcome surprise for fans.
The most recent win on Friday has propelled the Bulldogs into second place out of six in the district. Awaiting the red-hot Bulldogs are their equally strong (and also 3-1 in district) rivals, the Cooper Cougars. Friday will hold a sure-to-be exciting battle, with the last regular season game for both teams being a battle for clinching second place and a much-welcome home playoff game.
The Southtown Showdown will be sure to meet expectations. With the band playing, cheerleaders rooting for the team, and both sides not taking a loss as an answer, Friday will be a must-watch game. Both teams have reason to celebrate, but neither are satisfied. If you’re a fan of football, make sure to come check the teams out this week!
