“I have been volunteering for Student Council for three years, and I have found it to be a great outlet in supporting the Wylie district and community through our many different projects. My experiences in this organization have also helped cultivate myself as a leader in addition to just being something I enjoyed doing outside of school,” Tehzeeb Grewal, student council co-president stated.
Wylie Student Council is an organization made to help make the environment at Wylie High School a better place. They do many things to help the student body and staff. Within Student Council, there are specific committees made to help a specific part of the school or community. There’s community service, energy and environment, D.A.S.H, and pride a patriotism. Each one consists of a group of students working to improve that area in our school. Community service does tasks in our community to help make it a better place. DASH focuses on drug and alcohol awareness to spread information to students to try and help them make good decisions. Energy and environment works to help make our environment cleaner and safer. We need to maximize all that this world has to offer, and working on the energy being used and the overall environment is crucial. Last but not least, pride and patriotism focuses on having pride of our school and what it represents. We should be proud of our school and all of the opportunities it provides for us.
A few other things student council does in our school are decorating the bulletin boards, volunteering to work concession stands, help manage things at football games, and doing kind things for teachers. Before the start of school, student council got together to make gift bags for teachers, wishing them a great first day of school. Student council also works the volleyball and basketball concessions stands to help serve the costumers and people at the Wylie games. Also, every month, they replace the bulletin boards in the cafeteria depending on anything going on in the month. They put inspirational messages to encourage our school. For example, they put things up for mental health awareness, wishing students a good break, and just positive things to make people feel good.
Co-president, Blaze Valentine, says, “I have been a part of Wylie StuCo since 8th grade. Student council has given me the opportunity to have a voice in improving our school. I’ve had many opportunities to hear amazing speakers and be a part of so many amazing opportunities to grow in my leadership. Sometimes it may be stressful, but I wouldn’t change my time in Student Council for anything.”
