Wylie ISD has been a school district since 1905. Steadily growing over the years, Wylie has made several expansions to its campus including the newer East side. Recently, Wylie has hit a huge growth period, gaining over 1800 students since 2013. The 2023 Wylie Bond Election plans to expand and upgrade multiple aspects of the school district. The bond plans to fund three separate propositions with a grand total of $296 million.
Proposition A includes the necessary expansions to keep up with the growing student population. These expansions would include the following:
- Expansion to the high school
- A new elementary school
- An expansion to the East Intermediate School
- Upgrades to safety and security
- New buses and transportation
- Improvements to the paving
- Campus Renovations
- Upgrades to district-wide equipment
This proposition would use $234 million of the total funds to improve the school district and education experience for the students. The expansion to the high school would include a new agriculture building, a new turf field for all activities that require one to practice on, new tennis courts, 62 new classrooms, and a new practice gym. These expansions would allow for students and teachers to more efficiently utilize class and practice time.
Proposition B would use $29 million of the funds to build a new community event center. This proposition would tear down the concession stand/fieldhouse/public restrooms at Hugh Sandifer Stadium to build a two level community center. The top level would include a prep-kitchen for the Culinary Arts class as well as the ability to host a multitude of school events. The bottom level would be used for coaches’ offices, concessions, locker rooms, and public restrooms.
Proposition C would use $6 million of the funds to finance new technology for students and teachers. New tech would provide more opportunities for the students and teachers to work on projects and lesson plans. It would improve the efficiency and flow of lessons and give students who don’t have access to technology at home a chance to keep up with their classmates.
Unfortunately, since the school district does not receive state funding, property taxes within the district will be raised to fund the bond. Regardless, these propositions would greatly improve our school district and education system. Election day is on November 7, but early voting starts on October 23 and runs until November 3.
