On October 31st, our upperclassmen’s hard work was rewarded; the Wylie High School Academic Awards Assembly was held in the P.A.C. The principals presented letter-man jackets and medals to studious pupils who had an average of 94 or above as well as those with the highest grade in a class. The experience was a great opportunity to honor our hard-working students.

The first award ceremony was held during second period for the sophomores followed by juniors and seniors throughout third and fourth period respectively. All the students individually walked the stage where they were handed their award(s) and then had the chance for a photo-op with one of the principals. Geoffrey Englin described the experience as “a pleasant surprise”. He felt “a little angst” while receiving his letter-man and medal for highest average in World Geography and Honors Algebra 2, but once he saw his parents out in the crowd, Geoffrey “couldn’t help but smile and enjoy the moment”.  With his “God-given talent for math”, he managed to excel in Mrs. Evenden’s advanced class and did his “best throughout the year” to propel him to success. At the award ceremony, students not only celebrated their own achievements but congratulated others. As the pupils walked the stage, their friends could be heard, clapping with admiration. For Geoffrey, it was his “favorite part of the ceremony”. He believes that the awards ceremony is an exceptional way “to acknowledge all students for their talents in different areas” and “allow [them] to celebrate” with one another.

Last year, the award attendees were fitted for their letter-men and chose personal designs. Each and every academic letter-man has yellow sleeves and purple body material. This makes every jacket unique but different at the same time; the similar style unites the award winners, yet the customized patches makes them special. The range of styles included one’s last name on the back or front of the jacket within an accommodated font. Including names there are also countless extracurricular-themed patches that can be added such as football, dance, choir, soccer, and many others. The individualized letter-mans are as diverse as the students throughout Wylie’s halls.

The wide-spread excellence at this year’s awards ceremony displays the diligent work the pupils of Wylie High School ingrain into their classes. Our students, like Geoffrey, are “self-driven” and “are constantly striving to . . . be [their] very best”. With so much promise shown in this assembly, next year even more students will be commended. Geoffrey hopes to “earn the highest average in a class again . . . but [is] more than grateful with maintaining an A average.” Wylie is certainly encouraging students to work hard toward their goals.
